The Successful Applicant

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. United States Citizenship: Noncitizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Masters degree in Social Work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. Note: A doctoral degree in Social Work may NOT be substituted for the masters degree in Social Work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the masters degree level. You may qualify based on being covered by the grandfathering provision of this occupations qualification standard. (Only applicable to current VHA employees that are currently employed in this occupation series). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements stated above the following qualification criteria must be met for each grade. The candidates qualifications must clearly demonstrate the level of competence required for the grade. Education and Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the GS11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other postmasters degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. GS12 In addition to meeting the basic requirements for this occupation you must possess the following Knowledge Skills and Abilities: 1) Ability to independently organize work set priorities and meet multiple deadlines. 2) Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision consultation negotiation with other departments and quality improvement. 3) Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services. 4) Ability to provide staff training and development. 5) Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees team leaders and managers. Preferred Experience: At least 45 years of experience working in a medical social work setting Case Management experience Program Management experience Documented experience working with one or more complex populations which may include but not limited to: Renal Transplant or Chronic Pain Prior experience in a supervisory/management role Experienced in evaluating suicide risk and engaging patients in safety planning Excellent communication skills Knowledge/Experience with VA systems and resources preferred Works well with others using a team approach to meeting program or agency goals Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Word Excel) and other software programs Reference: For more information on this qualification standard please visit https://www.va.gov/ohrm/QualificationStandards/. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 12. Physical Requirements: Physical aspects associated with work required of this assignment are typical for the occupation see Duties section for essential job duties of the position. May require standing lifting carrying sitting stooping bending puling and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions the area is adequately lighted heated and ventilated. However the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situation.
